LEGO Therapy for Veteran Wellbeing: The Brick Hut x Blesma in Newark

Supporting Veterans Through LEGO Therapy

A few weeks back, we had the privilege of supporting an incredible cause, working alongside Blesma to deliver a LEGO therapy workshop at YMCA Newark.

Blesma carries out vital work supporting limbless and injured veterans, helping them rebuild their independence and live full, active lives. Events like this are just one of the many ways they bring people together, creating space for connection, support, and shared experiences.

We were proud to play a small part in that.

The Importance of Community

The event at YMCA Newark brought together veterans, families, and support staff in a relaxed and welcoming environment. From the moment the session began, there was a genuine sense of openness—people chatting, sharing stories, and taking time to simply be present.

Spaces like this matter. They provide an opportunity to step away from day-to-day pressures and connect with others who understand similar experiences. That sense of community is at the heart of what Blesma does so well.

LEGO Therapy in Action

Our role for the day was to facilitate a LEGO therapy workshop—an approach that uses creative building as a way to support communication, wellbeing, and social interaction.

Rather than focusing on instructions or outcomes, the session encouraged participants to build freely, collaborate where they wanted to, and engage at their own pace. Some chose to take on small creative challenges, others worked together on shared builds, while a few simply enjoyed the process of sitting down and creating.

What stood out most was how naturally the activity brought people together. Conversations began to flow more easily, ideas were shared, and there was a noticeable sense of calm as the session progressed.

LEGO becomes more than just a tool in these moments—it creates a bridge between people.

Why Workshops Like This Matter

Creative workshops like this can have a powerful impact, particularly in settings focused on wellbeing and recovery.

They offer:

  • A low-pressure way to engage socially
  • An accessible activity for all abilities
  • A chance to focus, relax, and reset
  • Opportunities for collaboration without expectation

At their core, these sessions are about people—not the bricks. It’s about creating an environment where individuals feel comfortable, included, and able to engage in a way that suits them.

That’s something we always aim to bring to every workshop we deliver.

“A small group of our Members really enjoyed Lego building with Kathryn from The Brick Hut. There was a great selection of kits to choose from and even a Lego sceptic is now considering buying kits to do at home!”

A Collaborative Effort

We’d like to thank Blesma for the opportunity to be involved in such a meaningful event, and to everyone who attended and took part. It’s always a privilege to work alongside organisations that are making a real difference in people’s lives.

A big thank you as well to the team at YMCA Newark for providing a welcoming space for the day.

We’re proud to support organisations like Blesma and to deliver workshops that can be adapted to suit a wide range of groups—from community organisations to schools and wellbeing programmes.

Each session is different, shaped by the people in the room, but the goal remains the same: to create a space where people can connect, create, and feel at ease.

Today was a reminder of the importance of community, creativity, and support.

Most importantly, it highlighted the incredible work that Blesma continues to do for veterans and their families. We’re grateful to have been a small part of that, and we look forward to supporting similar initiatives in the future.
